Classroom Update

Barrandhang (Kindergarten/Year 1)
Welcome to an exciting year of learning together with Mrs Ellie Worland and Mrs Jacinta Elwin, with the additional support of our wonderful Classroom Assistants, Miss Ashlea and Miss Haylee.
We have started our InitiaLit Literacy program and are focusing on
- What is a Word? How many words are in sentences - both in oral and written language.
- Recognising rhyming words
- Recognising syllables in words - clapping and counting them
- Listening to stories and increasing our vocabulary
In Maths lessons we have started to focus on counting and recognising numbers. We are also learning about days of the week and shapes.
In Science this term we are focusing on Living Things in Biology - what do living things need to survive - food, air, water and shelter.
We shared our first mass today where we all received a special blessing with ashes on our foreheads. In Religion we are learning about praying, our church, and about Project Compassion. We were extremely proud of the students and their reverence in Mass today!
Happy Valentine Day from our class!

Dinawan (Year 1/2)

15th_February_2024.jpgDear Families,

We are thrilled to share with you the positive start we've had to the 2024 academic year here at St. Francis Xavier with Mrs. Carter leading the way in the Dinawan classroom. Our students have embarked on a journey filled with enthusiasm, learning, and growth. Regular attendance is key to academic success. Let's ensure every Dinawan student attends school, as it directly impacts their learning and overall educational experience. Along with attendance we are aiming to prioritise healthy eating and sleep, as it is vital for overall well-being and academic success. Encouraging balanced nutrition and sufficient rest for our students assist in them thriving.

So far in our classroom, students have established positive connections, grasped the school's rules and expectations, and crafted a structured routine, setting a strong foundation for their academic journey at St. Francis Xavier in the Dinawan classroom.

Fun learning activity for the week: Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is a significant cultural and traditional celebration observed by millions of people around the world, including many of our families here at St Francis Xavier. It marks the beginning of the lunar calendar and is a time for family reunions, feasting, and honoring ancestors. Dinawan Student's explored the book Fang Fang's Chinese New Year, which led into our theme "The year of the dragon" with students creating colourful dragons of their own.

Extra Notes: Homework and home reading:

I want to take a moment to emphasise the vital role that homework and reading play in your child's academic development. Both activities are essential components of their learning journey, offering numerous benefits that extend beyond the classroom. Homework serves as a valuable reinforcement of the concepts and skills taught in class. It provides students with the opportunity to practise and apply what they've learned independently, fostering a deeper understanding and mastery of the material. Additionally, homework encourages responsibility, time management, and self-discipline – all crucial skills that will serve your child well in their academic and professional pursuits. This can be achieved each night with short 20-30min reading, spelling, math and english activities.

Kindest Regards

Mrs. Carter

We have kicked off the year to a fantastic start with lots of excitement and smiling faces as we get back into school routines. This week we have started sending home homework. Homework will be handed out on Mondays and should be returned on Fridays to be marked. A part of your child's homework will be reading each night. Homework is about revising topics that have been taught and should be a stress free time. If you  have any questions or concerns about your child's homework please feel free to contact me through the school number.
Yibbai (Year 6)
Dear Parents/Caregivers,

I hope this letter finds you well and that you had a restful summer break. As we embark on a new academic year, I wanted to take a moment to share with you an overview of the exciting learning experiences that await your child in Years 5-6 this year.

Our curriculum is designed to provide a well-rounded and enriching education, fostering not only academic growth but also the development of critical thinking, creativity, and social skills. Throughout the year, your child will explore a variety of subjects, including English, Mathematics, RE, History, Geography, Science, PE, Sport, Creative Arts and Technology.

In 5-6, students will do a project each term, this is part of their homework as well as in class learning.

For homework, students will read a chapter book and keep a journal of what they have read, this is supported in class as well. They will choose a book in library, or they can read one from home.

The Dojo program will be used to communicate to you. I will send out invitations next week for you to accept.

I look forward to working with you this year. Any issues please make an appointment at the office to see me. I work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Cheers

Marilyn
