Classroom Update

BARRANDHANG (Kinder/Yr 1)

As part of our Science lessons over the past few weeks, the K/1 students have been finishing off our Earth and Space unit. Last week, students looked at and learned about four different constellations (groups of stars that form recognisable patterns). They explored the Pleiades (also known as the Seven Sisters), Scorpius, Orion (focusing on Orion's Belt), and the Northern Cross.

Students completed worksheets about the constellations, labelling and drawing each one. They also used their bodies to create the Northern Cross constellation. All students really enjoyed learning about constellations — we might have to explore a few more in the coming weeks!

This week 2/3 enjoyed learning about Diwali.  ‘Diwali’ means ‘row of lamps’. It symbolises the victory of light over darkness. It is celebrated by lighting small oil lamps called ‘diyas’, symbolising the lifting of spiritual darkness and the renewal of life. It is a time to pray for health, knowledge and peace.

The Resilience Project has kicked off again for another term! In this week’s lesson, students explored the power of gratitude by focusing on their bodies and all they do for us. They watched videos featuring Paralympian Ellie Cole and Australian of the Year Dylan Alcott and learned how embracing and being thankful for their unique bodies can help overcome challenges and build resilience. Students reflected on what they appreciate about their own bodies by drawing and annotating self-portraits, then shared their thoughts in class discussions. There were many thoughtful and meaningful annotations shared by the students, such as "arms so I can hug my family," "legs so I can dance," and "brain—so I never forget my favourite memories," to name a few. This lesson sparked conversations about the things we often take for granted and sometimes forget to appreciate. It encouraged students to develop a habit of gratitude, promoting self-acceptance and kindness towards themselves and others.
