Principal's Report
Throughout 2022 St Francis Xavier School has been on a journey of improvement. This coincides with the Canberra Goulburn Catholic Education system journey, together we are improving teacher quality and student achievement improvement.
Our staff have participated in many hours of Professional Learning this year, learning more about effective teaching in Writing, Reading and Numeracy as well as learning about the Science of Learning and the Science of Reading.
Through this improvement journey there have been changes to the teaching of English; reading, spelling and writing, in the Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 space, with the implementation of the InitiaLit program. Also in the primary spaces the new Spelling program Spelling Mastery has shown improvement in engagement with all students and improvement in spelling learning.
As a school in 2023 we will implement Connecting Maths Concepts and Oz-e-maths across the whole school, with students in numeracy groups at their level of learning. This may mean that students are not taught maths by their classroom teacher, as is the case with our Spelling Mastery groups.
Also next year we will be implementing the Science program Oz-e-Science. Each year level has four units, one for each term, covering the strands of biology, chemistry, physics, and earth and space. Oz-e-Science provides opportunities for students to engage in their local natural and social environments through science inquiry. Oz-e-Science includes a focus on science as a human endeavor by introducing at least one famous scientist per year level in each strand, and communicating stories of scientific progress.
Please feel free to contact the school if you have any questions about the new programs being implemented to improve our students' achievements.
