This week we celebrated NAIDOC week. Normally NAIDOC week is celebrated in July, but the date was moved due to COVID-19. This year's theme, 'Always Was, Always Will Be', recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and encourages appreciation of the wealth and breadth of Aboriginal Nations, languages and knowledges.
Although we haven't celebrated as a community this year we have spent this week being involved in many learning and fun activities around NAIDOC week and learning more about culture and our history.
Next week our Year 3/4 students will head out to Murrin Bridge Preschool to participate in some NAIDOC Activities with the children at the preschool. The Year 3/4 students will travel out on the school bus with Mrs Morris and Mrs Elwin.
Each year the Canberra Goulburn Catholic Education system acknowledges exemplary practice, dedication and innovation of staff. This year one of our treasured staff members, Ms Sharon Thorpe, was rewarded with a Recognition Award.
The words accompanying the presentation of the award were, "Sharon Thorpe has tirelessly served the community of St Francis Xavier in significant ways for over 25 years. Her continued dedication and support for students, student's families and for staff is exceptional!'
This award is completely deserved, and we are so very proud of Sharon.
Last week we celebrated Mission Week, through fundraising and our first whole school mass for some time. Through our fundraising; Trash n Treasure, Money line and recycling our fruitboxes and other drink containers, we were able to send $870 to Catholic Missions - more than double the amount we sent last year.
We will continue to recycle our drink containers to raise funds for Catholic Mission and Caritas. Any family wishing to support this fundraising and wishing to reduce their waste can drop recyclable drink containers (10c) at school for us to continue to support these worthwhile charities.
Can you please ensure your child comes to school with their hat and a water bottle each day. Our school policy is NO HAT NO PLAY, unfortunately some children have been coming to school with no hat or water bottle, it is very important in the warmer weather for all children to be drinking lots of water and be wearing a hat at all times while outside. If there are any families that have spare hats at home and would like to donate them to the school as spares this would be mostly appreciated.
The School has a raffle running to win a Thermomix valued at over $2300 tickets are $25 each and only 200 tickets will be sold. If you wish to purchase a ticket please contact the School, Shane Phillips or Nicole Wood.
