As a school and parish community we attended Ash Wednesday liturgy this week to celebrate the beginning of Lent. Ash Wednesday is important because it marks the start of the Lenten period leading up to Easter, the resurrection of Jesus to new life after his crucifixion and death.
Our Year 6 leaders will return to being altar servers in our church after 3 years, and they are looking forward to this special privilege. Thank you to Leigha, Scarlet and Beau who volunteered to have a go this first time.
During our Lenten season, as Christians, we are called to improve our lives through focusing on Prayer, fasting and giving.
We pray to improve our relationship with God and others. We fast, as Jesus did when he spent 40 days in the wilderness. And we try to give more throughout Lent as helping others is a tradition of the Lent season, inspired by the command of Jesus to "love your neighbour as yourself." While we should likewise give to others in love throughout the entire year, an extra emphasis is added during the time of Lent.

Welcome to Year 6 Yibaay, this year's teachers are
Mrs Carter: Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri (classroom Teacher)
Mrs Shaw: Wednesday and Tuesday Afternoon (Classroom Teacher)
Mr T: Mon-Fri (Teaching Support)
This year I hope to work with Year 6 Yibaay students in successfully striving for excellence; and preparing students for their future at high school. This can be seen through a happy, inclusive environment that supports students' overall learning, health and wellbeing. I believe when students are happy and comfortable in their environment, they're engaged positively and effectively in their academics.
From Mrs Shaw:
Hello Parents
I hope you and your family had a lovely holiday break. This year I will be teaching ICT and taking RFF for the teachers. Students will be doing a variety of computer and STEM lessons.
On Wednesday I will be on Year 6, and we will be using technology in a variety of ways. This will include some homework with projects. We will be using a T4L magazine on technology and this comes with an array of activities for students to learn different aspects of research, design and application using different platforms. The first novel we will be reading is "The List" by Patricia Forde.
As well as learning to program using the Grok platform to further enhance their skills. part of the day Wednesday we will be doing Genius Hour, this is when students can research, design or make something of their choice.
I am looking forward to this year with your child.
Marilyn Shaw ICT teacher
We encourage all children to have excellent attendance at St Francis Xavier School.
Regular school attendance brings enormous benefits to students, their families, the school and the community as a whole. Without regular attendance, levels of learning suffer and opportunities are missed. Continued and persistent absence and lateness will affect a student's achievement and progress in school.
It is family's legal responsibility that your child attends school each day and is on time. Children with attendance less than 96% are identified as a concern if absences are unauthorised.
Aussie of the Month will be starting up again this term with nominations opening this week. Aussie of the Month recognises and celebrates personal endeavour, achievement, and contribution to the community and reflects the universal values we share as Australians; such as fair go, mateship, respect and inclusion. Students and teachers can nominate someone they believe deserving of this award. The winner will be announced at the end of each month and will receive a certificate and badge.
YOU CAN SIT WITH ME is a highly visible yellow wristband worn by children to show that they welcome anyone to sit with them regardless of their age, race, religion, gender or disability.
Children are guided on what to do and say if someone comes to sit with them by asking “Are you ok?”
Western Region Swimming Carnival
Western Region Swimming was held yesterday, 23rd of February 2023. Congratulations to those students that represented St Francis Xavier in Young.
Mrs Golding and Miss Sharon were exceptionally proud of the performance and behaviour of our representatives! Most students showed an improvement in their times and Leigha Brooks received a third in her backstroke event.
Thank up to the parents and teachers that gave up their time to enable the students to participate and represent our school. The students showed great team sport and cheered one another on throughout their races.
ESafety Advice for Parents - ThinkUKnow Program
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) are urging families to be proactive this school year and update the privacy settings on children’s devices to help prevent predators from contacting them online.
The AFP-led ThinkUKnow program – Australia’s first and only nationally delivered, law enforcement-led online safety program – has produced guides for parents and carers.
- Gaming devices and what you need to know
- Parent and carer social media starter kit For more information, visit this website.
Murra THinna Preschool - First Dig Turning of Soil
Our Year 6 students will represent our school at this special event next week. Students will travel by school bus with Mrs Elwin driving and Mrs Carter supervising. We are looking forward to this special celebration.
